I went up to help Chris Jordan build his new computer,
and decided to hang out in the area,
Doug Kerr lives fairly close by,
So we took a spin round his environs the next day(9th January 2k5).
All links open in a seperate window.

Saratoga County, Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa
Southbound on the Northway(IH 87) north of JN 15.
Approaching JN 15 here.
Oddly the higher number is posted first here.
Here you can see the tenth-mile markers used in NYSDOT region 1.
These count up from JN 1, not the southern terminus of the IH 87;
At the Deegan and Bruckner Expressways in NYC.
You're approximately at mile 184 here.
Leaving the Northway at JN 15.
Note the split overpass.
The Northway's central reservation is so wide that this happens often.
Mixed-case sign on the JN 15 off slip.
A rarity; most off-freeway signs are Series “D” capital letters.
Westbound on NY 50 at the Gick Road junction,
heading into Saratoga Springs.
Note the “missing” streetlights.
This is common in this area.
In Downtown Saratoga Springs, southbound on US 9:
At Broadway and Lake Avenue.
Continuing south On US 9: Broadway in Saratoga Springs.
In summer you have the races,
but as you can see there's still a bit of traffic here in winter.
A mast-arm mounted 3M PV signal at the southern split of US 9 and NY 50
in Saratoga Springs. They don't make these anymore.
Here’s a fibreoptic two-phase turn signal.
These are getting rare; Bimodal LEDS are replacing them.
South on US 9. Heading back to IH 87 at JN 13.
It's 4 lanes like this back into the Albany suburbs.
US 9 in a dual carriageway crossing Kayaderosseras Creek.
This southeast of Saratoga Spa State Park.
A nice long shot along US 9 looking south.
This is just south of Saratoga County Highway 63.
The south end of NY 9P.
NY 9P loops east around Saratoga and rejoins US 9 in the City of Saratoga Springs.
Doing a bit of looping here ourselves,
We're on NY 67 westbound, heading to Ballston Spa.
Here's the signal at NY 67 and NY 50,
just south of the Village of Ballston Spa.
The junction is at an acute angle, explaining the long visors.
Now on Saratoga County Highway 63 heading east back towards US 9.
This lets out near the long shot of US 9 above.
A picture-postcardy shot along Malta Road.
The area had gotten a fair snowfall the day before.
Who sez you can't get nice road snaps in winter?
A railway underpass on US 9 near Round Lake.
The Usher's Road Junction on US 9.
A right turn takes you back to the Northway at JN 10
Just past the light, you go under this railway overpass.
Chis Jordan has also snapped similar signals-
Normal Red and Yellow with a Programmed Visibilty green.
No clue why this is. The junction is at right angles.
Albany County, City of Cohoes
Renssalaer County, Troy
We left US 9 and took in part of the VERY short NY 9R.
Now, we're getting ready to turn onto NY 470 which leads to Cohoes.
Note the classic NY stylee “9”.
Eastbound on NY 470, looking at what apppears to be a City of Cohoes NY 470 sine.
In the City of Cohoes,
NY 470 turns left past this ex-railway overpass.
It's now a Bike Route.
And why spend $ on sines, when you can just stencil stoof on the bridge?
Just past the overpass, NY 470 turns left.
Dig the lo-rent arrow plate.
4-way Signal Salad from Cohoes and Troy(the right hand one), NY
These are doomed though:
I saw politically correct mast-arms at some juctions.
A skankin’ Double-guyed Eagle(I think)4-way in the City of Cohoes.
NY 470 meets NY 32 and a block down the road, the NY 787 expressway.
If you turned north on NY 787, you would go one block north to it's end at NY 32!
South on NY 32 in the City of Cohoes,
Mowhawk Street does a crossing at angle and goes to Van Schlack Island.
A railway spur crosses here(part of the line crossed the overpass above).
Obviously a low volume crossing, controlled by this red-yellow signal.
The Broadway Bridge linking Van Schaick Island
with The rest of Cohoes on the west bank of the Hudson.
The 112th bridge linking Cohoes and Lansingburg(Troy) NY 470 ends here.
Find out more about this bridge from Capital Highways
City of Troy Welcome sign.
This is at the north end of 2nd Street(US 4).
Close to the Waterford Bridge.
This close. Here's the Waterford Bridge, US 4 North(Though we're looking west).
Officially, this is the Union Bridge, per Doug Kerr.
Doug and I parted company at this point,
and I jumped in the Tempoo and headed back home. I took a few shots on the way.
Albany County
Southbound on the NY 787 expressway. It's really more a boulevard.
IH 787's mileposts continue along this section of the route.
Another shot of the expressway section.
Coming up on the Interstate freeway section of route 787.
This is still the state route section,
but you can see an Interstate style milepost.
The freeway begins here at the “Alternate 7” junction.
The interstate iself does NOT end here,
but turns east with NY 7 and runs over the Collar City Bridge to 5th Street in Troy.
The bridge ahead is for the semi-directional slip from NY 7 west to IH 787 south.
The off slip advertised is a loop.
Just south of JN 9, a disused railway bridge stands in for a gantry for the JN 8 advance sign,
And here’s a Spiffen new full span box gantry at junction 8 itself.
Note the redundant ground sign. These are usually posted before the gantries.
JN 7 links to the Troy-Menands Bridge;
as well as a short freeway spur extending west.
Junction 6 is a trumpet junction that links to NY 32 and the Village of Menands.
2 Shots(count ’em, 2!)of one of the two complete stax in all of NY!
JN 5 on IH 787 and un-numbered on IH 90.
But we make up for the lack of stax with the only circular stack ever(I think).
The Flyoverly goodness is actually JN 4.
You also get a Quasimodo sine in the mix. What a bargain!
I didn't dig the moving van spuming snow off it's roof, tho.
One last junction with NY 32; near the Port of Albany.
You won't find any great huge cruise ships here,
but the Hudson runs a LOT of barge traffic.
