Here’s an odd junction sine in the Hamlet of Wallkill.
A cast iron highway state highway sign.
This isn’t it’s original location or paint job.
The nearest state road is NY 208-a good ¾ mile from here.
The Bruyn Turnpike(Ulster CH 18) bridge over the Wallkill River.
Rather an unusual bridge for the area.
Even more unusual is what appears to be a lock-
Look at the wall midway under the first arch.
Here’s a look at that “Canal Lock”
and the lock gate. This is a long way from the Delaware and Hudson Canal
Which runs along the Rondout Creek, north of here.
Old school Ulster County Highway sine at the east foot of the bridge.
Center pier of the old Bruyn Turnpike bridge?
You can often find old abutments and piers like this.
Brand new bridge on NY 52 over the Walkill River at Walden.
This is a Cianbro job. Unlike the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge,
this is all new from the ground up; not just a re-decking.
Looking east across the new bridge.
You get spiffy retro lampposts.
This pretty much done, and only needs the approaches sealed
and the approach guiderails.
Tossed Sine Salad here: These are area street and road signs.
Most will be put back up when the bridge is finished.
The bit of Human is Doug Kerr.
Down NY 52 west of Pine Bush; A services and a Winery sign.
Westbound on NY 52 heading into Walker Valley between Pine Bush and Ellenville.
Between Walker Valley and Ellenville NY 52 crosses the Shawangunk Ridge.
This is the most impressive crossing of the ridge as far as views and scenery go.
This is popular in summer with hikers.
The eastern approach is a straighforward upgrade,
but the western approach “sidles” up the ridge;
Which makes for good views if the valley to the west.

Westbound on NY 52 at US 209 in Ellenville.
A fairly old guide sign.
NY 52 has an odd couplet here: Both halves are two way.
US 209 Southbound between Ellenville and Wurtsboro.
a good fast road hat could easily be posted for 60 MPH.
Since this was a NY POWER Roadgeek meeting,
We had to fall out at the Holy Yellow STOP Sine!
Been wanting to get a better shot of this, anyway.
“Terrence and Phillip” NO ENTRY sine.
These are common in Sullivan County,
but this one is especially good shape.
Adam prince had a look at the lower sign here and said:
“This isn’t right”
This is sort of a seedy resort, common to the area.
When we passed the Nevele, Chris Jordan asked if it was a prison.
Not that there are any shortage of those-There a 6 in a 25 mile radius.
US 209 overpass of NY 17 at JN 113.
The first snap looks relatively normal;
but in the second, you can see what a hurting unit this bridge is.
The textured concrete structure beyond
is the center support for the replacement bridge.
Looking east on NY 17 at j113.
NY 17 does a huge horsehoe here,
as there are ridges on either side of the valley.
The valley here is about two miles wide.
J113 is at the bottom of the “U”.
That crane was used to hang the girders
you see in the next snaps.
Looking north at the new US 209 overpass of NY 17.
The steel plating for the bridge deck is staged at the north abutment.
J113 has been undergoing some serious work to improve sight lines;
and I have a feeling US 209 will be dualled through this junction.
This half of the bridge will likely be done by late spring.
Update! 20th October 2k5 US 209-NY 17 jumction reconstruction.
Not great as they were taken by my mobile camera;
but here it is just the same. |
The new half of the j113 bridge is open, now.
This is just south of the bridge. |
The new half of the j113 bridge.
This is actually on the bridge.
The actual “railing” is beyond the Jersey wall. |
Looking east out over NY 17 from the bridge. |
North of the j113 bridge.
Note the temporarily mounted directional sign. |
Looking at the westbound NY 17 on-slip. |
North of the freeway, US 209 is being resurfaced. |
| Pehicoal Lane(Petticoat Road) Bridge over Shawangunk Kill |
Now here’s a bit of fun and historical action.
This is the Pehicoal Lane(Petticoat Road) Bridge over Shawangunk Kill north of Bloomingburg,
Just off Burlingham Road-Sullivan CH 61/Ulster CH 7.
You’ll note the date on the bridge(third-fouth snaps).
It’s arguably the oldest active road bridge in the area.
The Croton Bridge company is responsible for a number of bridges in the Northeast.
The first shot looks east; the second west.
They REALLY wanted to keep everything but cars off this bridge.
because the headroom looks to be 12’ really.
The deck is wooden(there's wooden kerbing) with an asphalt overlay.
Adam Prince really dug this.
US 209 soutbound again; at the bridge over the Neversink River.
This is the same Neversink River at the Neversink Reservior on NY 55,
where the town of Neversink was sunk.
The Maple Avenue Underpass of the old Erie(now Metro North) line.
The horizontal signal is actually a wig-wag now; the center section has no lens.
The underpass is one lane, people stop and sound their horn before gong through.
East of here this turns into Orange County Highway 80 and links back to US 209.
The NY-NJ line monument under the IH 84 bridge
southeast of Laurel Grove Cemetary in Port Jervis.
This is NOT the state line.
THIS is the actual State Line;
And of course, all of us took the opportunity to stand in 3 states at once.
Looking southeast along the Delaware;
PA on the right bank, NJ at left.
The IH 84 Delaware Bridge.
Looking west; then east.
Okay, not even close to the original trip;
but it’s just across the Delaware in PA.
A junction with US 6 and US 209 in Matamoras, PA-
crossing the reservation is disallowed,
so you can only turn right. |
And back at the Cadillac Ranch,
(Left to right)Doug Kerr, Adam Prince and Chris Jordan visit the Tempoo,
Lying in State. They're supposed to be crying.
Adam didn’t even take off his hat-Guess hat hair is THAT embarassing.
