The Tempoo's successor is in hand. It's a 1988 Olds Delta 88;
a great huge barge with a great huge motor, but it’ll do to knock around.
So I thought I'd start it off right by making a local run to czech up on some stoof.

All links open in a separate window.

Eastbound on NY 17 passing over the IH 84.
Approaching the Wallkill River bridge eastbound on NY 17;
You get PLENTY of warning of the impending construction.
You can see a typical Region 8 freeway milepost.
Crossing the Wallkill River Bridge.
Eastbound traffic crosses on the last original part of the bridge,
Westbound traffic is using what will be reservation barrier and offside shoulder.
The westbound lanes are air in this snap. This will likely be done in Summer 2k5.
The Fletcher Street Bridge over NY 17.
This bridge was severely damaged by an overheight van in 2k3.
It stayed closed until July 2k4 when it was taken down and replaced.
That was done in a record 3 mos. This new bridge not only is higher,
It looks much nicer, too.
Approaching the South Street Junction in Goshen.
The South Street Sridge is in project.
The woodwork you see is for a pedestrian walkway.
Looking north across NY 17 at South Street.
You can see the new center pier, which is as high as the top of the old deck
Half of the old bridge has been removed;
including the piers shown In this snap. This is an early stage in the works.
A better look at the festivities here.
Here you can see where the old pier and bridge members were removed.
Two lanes of traffic are maintained on the remaining bridge;
with width restrictions, obviously.
Fulfill yr Evel Knievel fantasies here!
This is the wooden structure you see from the freeway in the snap above.
A pedestrian walkway. The Astroturf is a nice touch.
The nice thing about the pedestrian walk, is the screen is large mesh,
allowing for this nice westbound overhead shot of NY 17.
Impact absorbing device on the north side of the bridge.
Looking south over the freeway from the other side of the bridge.
Looking into the Abyss! Aieeeeeee!
A unique incarnation of this particular sign.
It's usually black on white.
The Chariot of Fire awaits in a car park as I gallivant around.
This is former j126 eastbound on NY 17.
This is a 2k3 Snap
There is a gate at the old junction. I have yet to see it closed.
Some of the old signage still stands;
Directing traffic back to NY 94.
So do some of the reference markers.
I think this orphan section of road will be given to the town.
NY 17M passing over the NY 17 freeway east of Chester.
NY 17M is basically a southern outer highway for NY 17.
Except with lots more curves.
Coming into the Village of Monroe;
You find this fairly old junction assembly eastbound on NY 17M.
Some of it sort of reflects.
Typical ugly development along NY 17M in Monroe.
NY 17m actually passes south of the main section of town;
and all sorts of businesses moved right out to the highway.
Orange County Highway 19 South of Monroe is noted as “Old Orange Turnpike”
Ny 17 is also Orange Turnpike south of the ORCO 19 jn;
So this may be an old alignment of NY 17.
Makes sense to me.
A nice country scene along ORCO 19.
Just in case you might get the idea that there is no open space left in
Southern NY, here's a snap on ORCO 19 that proves the contrary.
This could be mistaken for a state highway quite easily.
Many Orange County Routes approach State quality(Except for the HELLvetica sines).
Now on a kinda narrow section of NY 17; between Tuxedo and Sloatsburg.
Note the train in the left hand section of the snap.
That's the NJ Transit(Metro North) train from Port Jervis.
And yes, since this is a single line, the train runs backward from Port Jervis to Hoboken.
I rode this line going to Edison in July 2k3. I found the lengthy backwards ride annoying.
Now heading east on the Seven Lakes Parkway out of Sloatsburg.
This is Reference Route 987E.
Seven Lakes Drive passing under the Thruway;
Stony Brook is immediately south of Seven Lakes Drive;
and is in a channel under the Thruway bridge.
Then it passes under 7 Lakes Drive, just past the Thruway.
At the entrance to Harriman State Park;
You get this destination sign.
Mighta been nice to include mileages...
An upgrade on 7 Lakes Drive, heading towards the Lake Welch Parkway junction.
Northbound turning around for Lake Sebago at the Lake Welch JN.
Heading the opposite way on a short dual carriageway.
And back around again! Getting dizzy yet?
You can see typical directional signage on 7 Lakes Drive here.
Kanawauke Circle-The junction with Rockland County Highway 106-
former NY 210. Convieniently located near Lake Kanawauke.
And another directional sine.
Looking northeast on 7 Lakes Drive at the junction
Kanawauke Circle-The 7 Lakes aspect.
Between Lake Kanawauke and Lake Tiorati on 7 Lakes Drive.
Pretty scenic any time of year, really.
Passing by Lake Askoti.
Coming up on Lake Tiorati now.
It's quiet here, because it's winter, but in summer,
I’ll wager there is a lot more activity.
Here’s one junction sign at Tiorati Brook Road;
This one using shields for a change.
Kind of confusing just the same.
Looking east on Tiorati Brook Road, which is closed for the winter.
The sign in the distance lets you know that.
Also note the independent PIP-type shield.
Looking out over Lake Tiorati, which is mostly still frozen.
Looking west into Tiorati Circle.
I didn't look into the building in the center of the roundabout.
So I have no clue what this might be. Perhaps it's a public loo.
Rolling again, Heading to the US 6 junction.
Don't mind the hood ornament.
The 88-88 has a few more acres of bonnet than the Tempoo,
it takes getting used to.
The plus is I can let it for space for a flea market.
Northbound on the PIP. Another bridge shot here at j19.
North(east)bound on the PIP past j19,
you have this hill on the north side of the freeway.
This is The Torne. George K. on MTR pointed that out.
Here’s a topographic map of the area.
My shot is from approximately where you see the US 6/PIP enter the map.
Looks cool just the same.
Entering the Bear Mountain Rounddabout;
You get a decent shot of one of the roundabout gantries.
I call this is the Jersey Entrance-
Cos NJ drivers often shoot out of here at speed-right in front of my van.
Good thing we keep after the brakes.
A better shot of the southern Highland Falls(NY 218) overpass of US 9W.
Here’s a 2k1 Shot. of the same bridge.
The northern Highland Falls overpass.
The NY 218 page covers this in some detail.
Except for THIS bridge shot...
A golf cart overpass of US 9W just south of the NY 218-NY 293 junction.
US 9 and NY 218-NY 293 part the ways here.
The highway starts up Storm King here.
Not much room for a highway here-That’s a steep drop to your right.
This is an absolute joy in the snow.
Passing through a rock cut.
This is the Summit of Storm King.
And this is my favourite section: The BIG CURVE.
It's advisoried for 35 MPH southbound; and you do well to take the advice.
